How do you set up a website to sell products online?

There are three basic options. One is choosing a shopping cart to show off your products. The second is a hosted payment page. The third is to get an online Point-of Sale Software that links up on your website.

The shopping cart allows customers to set up various items with different prices. Customers choose what they want to purchase and add items to a cart. In order to collect a credit card for payment, one needs to get a credit card processor and also set up a payment gateway.
Authorize.net is such a gateway. It is not a payment processor. Both are needed. Most processors work with Authorize.net and many have their own gateways that work similarly to Authorize.net.

If you do not have very many items, you can avoid the shopping cart and get a hosted payment page from your payment processor. It is a like a small, simple shopping cart for a lot less money. Customers can choose their item and quantity. The hosted payment page will calculate the total. The hosted payment page also used a gateway, usually the proprietary gateway of the processor.

The third way is to get a point-of-sale software that is programmed for online shopping. Some advantages of the point-of-sale software are:

  1. Inventory can be tracked.
  2. Supplies can be monitored for re-order.
  3. Customers can choose for products to be delivered or readied for pick-up.
  4. Discounts can be calculated for specific products or in general for specific groups of clients.
  5. The Point-of-Sale can manage your entire business.

And of course, the software must be connected to a gateway to accept payments online. The point-of-sale software provides a link to post on your website, which will take customers to your entire inventory of products. You have surely ordered food from your favorite restaurants
via an online menu connected to a point-of-sale software on the back end of the website.

Recently a new business contacted me who wanted to offer discounts for veterans and police clientele. The only way to set that up on their website was via a point-of-sale software.
